Every summer thousands of people throughout the UK suffer from problems with Wasps and Wasps Nests. The North West of England is no different. Wasps start nest building in early spring when the queen comes out of hibernation and starts the solitary task of creating the nest. When the first workers hatch from eggs in the small nest (the size of a golf ball), they then begin the hard work of nest building. As nests get bigger, so does the population that inhabit them. Nests have been known to home as many as 10,000 wasps. Thats a lot of stings!!

People say that wasps serve no purpose. That depends on the individual. They actually feed on spiders, caterpillars, ants and small bees. So if you arent particularly fond of creepy crawlies they take out of some of the other bad guys.

Some interesting facts about wasps are laid out below:-

  1. They beat they’re wings between 117 and 247 times per second.
  2. Wasps wings are made of Chitin. The Wings are platelike extensions of the integument (outer skeleton), strengthened by a framework of hollow chitinous tubes (veins)
  3. Wasps do have there own predators in the UK. These include dragonflies, robber flies, hornets, centipedes, and spiders and from the feathered kingdom twenty four varieties of birds are known to eat wasps including blackbirds, magpies, starlings. Then In the mammal kingdom, badgers are the chief predator: they destroy entire colonies to obtain the larvae-filled comb.
  4. The principal ingredient of the wasp sting is protein. This is the thing that causes the alergic reactions in people.
  5. Wasps are also still able to sting when dead. The poison sack at the end of the wasp keeps pulsing for a short period after a wasp dies, so if you come in contact with the sting you may still be injected with venom.
